Lady and Sons
Dec 9th
Thanks for the post from Barney Crosby
My mom’s best friend’s sister is Paula Deen’s personal assistant chef. So that means that when you turn on DIRECT TV and watch The Food Network and tune in to any of Paula Deen’s cooking shows, her personal assistant chef is the one that cooks everything that is shown on the show. One day on her show, Paula was talking about her restaurant that is called Lady and Sons in Savannah, Georgia. She was describing an awesome sounding dish called Lady and Sons Chicken Pot Pie. The recipe called for using frozen puff pastry, chicken More >

Amazing Fruitcake
Guest written by our friend Mason Abbott
I love fruitcake. I know there are some awful fruitcakes out there but don’t discredit the traditional fruitcake until you have tried many recipes. You might just find one that you like. Last week I was watching “The Martha Stewart Show” on my satellite tv that I got after seeing this Direct TV Offers Comparison, and Martha was doing a special holiday baking show. She had several different guests on that each prepared a special dish. My favorite was a recipe from the New York Times food columnist Melissa Clark who made an More >
Lemon Love
Mar 5th
Lemons are amazing things. Not only are they great with a little tequila and salt, but the rinds clean and refresh the garbage disposal when you put them in and grind them up!
Not to mention all the incredible nutrition in the lemon itself.
Did you know that if you put a lemon in water before you drink it, it may help relieve digestive problems?
Or, that you can use in on your face as an anti-aging remedy? It can help reduce the looks of wrinkles, and it gets rid of blackheads, too.
Lemons have so many other benefits as well, for instance, helping More >
Flavor Your Water With Cucumber
Feb 19th
We all know we need to drink more water. The thing is, sometimes, it gets a little boring. Water is, well, just water. There are times when I know I’m thirsty, and I get myself a tall glass of cool, clear water, and just drink in it’s freshness. But, other times, a little extra flavor might help. One way to “spice” up your water is to add, of all things, cucumber. You can slice a cucumber, and drop it into a pitcher of water, allowing the essence and flavor to infuse into the water. It is really quite delicious!

Green Spinach Salad
Jan 17th
I have always loved salads. Even as a child, when you’re supposed to hate vegetables, salads were still one of my favorites. Way back then, there were only 3 kinds of dressings, French, Thousand Islands, and Blue Cheese. Now, of course, the dressings are limitless, and so are the variations on salads. One reason I like fresh salads is the way I feel after eating them. Instead of feeling stuffed, and drowsy, and lethargic, I feel refreshed and energized. This is the way one should feel after eating a healthy meal. If you are not feeling better after having eaten, More >
Pre-workout Foods
Dec 27th
What you eat before you work out can have an affect on the results you get. What you want to do is eat a small snack before you work out, of about 100-200 calories. These should be a kind of food that is easily digested, for immediate use, like carbs, and not fats, as fats take much longer to become available, and won’t do you much good immediately. Fruit juice is good, so are energy bars, sports drinks, smoothies, and other fruits like pineapple, banana, mango, apricots, and watermelon.
As for larger meals, make sure you’ve eaten about 1-2 hours before More >
Keeping Bananas for Banana Bread
Sep 14th
Just a quick note here for those of us who plan to make banana bread this winter. Have you ever started to get everything out, only to discover that someone had eaten the last of the bananas that morning for breakfast? Isn’t it a pain to have a major ingredient missing from your plan? Or, perhaps, you know you have bananas, but when you go to get them, they are hard and green, and you just know that your banana bread is not going to be as sweet and delicious as it could be, if you’d had those browny, spotting, More >
Home Made Popcorn
Jul 19th
Back in the Good Ol’ Days, we used to pop popcorn right on the stove in a pot, can you believe it? Microwaves were unheard of, and we had to do it somehow…
Anyway, just in case you’ve heard that microwaves are not-so-good for you, and you’re trying not to use them, here is how we used to do it way back then. The little bit of sugar adds a sweetness to it, kind of like today’s “kettle corn”. But better.
4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup popcorn kernels (yellow is fine)
4 tsp sugar
3 Tbs unsalted butter (if using salted butter, just cut More >
Guacamole, Yum!
Jun 25th
Guacamole is an excellent addition to so many meals. It is versatile, and can have so many different variations, you can use it a variety of ways. Guacamole can be a dip all by itself, or an addition to tacos, or with chili. You can even spread it on your sandwich, or make a sandwich of just guacamole!
Here is one of my favorite variations on the dish:
Ingredients
2 large Haas avocados (remove the meat, and mush it up)
1 medium tomato , diced really small
½ cup cilantro, also chopped up really small
2 Tbs lime juice, fresh is best
½ sweet onion, diced really More >
