Well, this is actually a good thing.  I loved being pulled out of my rut.  And there are so many different kinds of food out there, that you could eat a different thing every day for the rest of your life and not even come close to trying them all.

Still one of my favorite and simplest changes has been the introduction of orange into the family slaw recipe.  Just take and orange and juice it to get the juice out.  Save that (it’s too runny for your slaw” and then put the PULP into your slaw.  You might even want to grate off a bit of the rind, but not too much.

What a snappy addition!  Try it, you’ll like it.  :)

I was watching television and saw a commercial advertisement for a butcher shop that is located near where I live. The shop is owned by the dad of a former childhood friend of my daughter. I was interested in seeing what they sell and at what prices, but I really did not want to go in there without knowing ahead of time in case it was too pricey for my budget. I did not want the embarrassment of not buying anything in case I ran into the owner. We have www.clearTVbundle.com so I decided to see if they had a website for the butcher shop. I ended up finding the website and was pleasantly surprised at what I found. It showed the weekly specials for all cuts of meats. They even had different packages that you could buy that included different types of meat in the same package. The package prices seemed to be really reasonable to me. And, by buying the packages, you could buy all types of meat that would last for a week, and then you could change the next week and get a different package so you would have a different menu the next week. I ended up signing up for their weekly email to let me know what specials they had for the week. Now I am looking forward to planning meals for the week with a variety of meats that fit into my budget.

Unfortunately, with times as they are, even the florists are cutting back.  This year I saw many a dozen roses being sold with no extra foliage at all.  This will just not do.

So, when you get your flowers home, be sure to add some greenery in the vase with them.  This is not as hard as you may think.  You don’t need to have fancy baby’s breath, or ferns, as are (were) standard.  Just look in your yard, or at the trees along the road.  Cedar trees have needle like leaves and branches that look great as a base for greenery in your flower arrangement.  Or, how about Leyland Cypress?  What about holly?  There are lots of evergreen trees and bushes around that won’t mind losing a clip, to make your loved one happy.

Ever since my dad signed up for CLEARTVbundle.com he has become hooked on The Food Network. I think that is so funny because when we were all growing up, we had a person that cooked for us and then my mother cooked the rest of the time when our cook was not there. We were not rich or anything, but that was just something we had growing up. Anyway, my dad has started to cook some in his older years. I will call to check on him and my mom, and he will tell me about some recipe that he has just whipped up for my mom to try out. He will watch some chef like Bobby Flay or a cook like Paula Deen and think that he can cook just like them. Most of the time though he has to go to The Food Network’s website and look up the recipes because he can’t write them down fast enough when he is watching the show. He usually has to go to the grocery store to pick up whatever weird ingredient the recipe will have that he doesn’t keep in stock. But I will say he has learned how to make a mean banana pudding.

It works remarkably well.  I think that peppermint tea would do the trick better than, say, sniffing a candy cane, but the essential oil of peppermint has long been known for helping people to reduce cravings, and lose that feeling of “gotta have something now!”

Not to mention that having a nice cup of peppermint tea would help to fill the stomach, and satisfy the taste buds at the same time.

However, many tea flavors are just too strong for me.  If I were to make a cup of tea, with a single teabag of, say spice tea in it, it would just have too strong a flavor for me.  So, I usually mix my teas.  Mixing teas means that you’ll have to be making more than one cup at a time.  That’s ok with me, as I usually drink more than one cup in a day anyway.  I generally put two or three regular teabags in a pot, and add one flavored tea with it.  This makes for great teas, with a less overpowering spicy taste.  Then, as the day goes on, I can just re-heat the pre-made tea, and enjoy it all day!

This won’t work, of course, if you must have your tea made fresh every time.  But I find it is an acceptable compromise to make, so that I can have just the kind of tea that I like.

So, I’ve been hunting and hunting for a way to insure that my hard-boiled eggs come out clean.  It has not been an easy task.

Someone told me that the eggs had to be “old”.  So I tried getting my eggs a couple of weeks ahead of time.  It didn’t help.

Someone told me that you have to keep the water temperature just below boiling all the time.  It didn’t help.

But this story has a happy ending.  A friend, a true friend indeed, told me that she had a sure fire cure for the mangled egg.  And she did!  Here’s what you do-  just before putting the egg into the water, tap it gently on the counter top.  Tap very gently, as you don’t want to bust open the shell, naturally, but if you keep tapping, and give it just a little more strength each time, at a certain point, you will create a teeny tiny crack in the surface of the egg.  It will not go all the way through, and the egg will still have all its integrity.  But somehow, that tiny little crack must let in enough water, between the shell and the egg proper, that when you cool the hard-boiled eggs, their shells will slip right off.

If you listen carefully when you are tapping, you will hear the crack happen.  After a bit of practice, you will never have another mangled egg again!

My mom’s best friend’s sister is Paula Deen’s personal assistant chef. So that means that when you turn on DIRECT TV and watch The Food Network and tune in to any of Paula Deen’s cooking shows, her personal assistant chef is the one that cooks everything that is shown on the show. One day on her show, Paula was talking about her restaurant that is called Lady and Sons in Savannah, Georgia. She was describing an awesome sounding dish called Lady and Sons Chicken Pot Pie. The recipe called for using frozen puff pastry, chicken breasts, onions, peas, carrots, and an optional ingredient was nutmeg. Everything sounded good until she got to the optional nutmeg. I cannot stand nutmeg. There is no way I would put nutmeg into a recipe. Thank goodness it was optional. I decided to try out the recipe on my family minus the nutmeg. I can tell you right now that it was a big hit. We are planning to go on a trip with my son’s baseball team in the spring to Savannah. I am thinking that we will make a reservation at The Lady and Sons Restaurant and try out the original Chicken Pot Pie. I wonder if it will be made with nutmeg.
